Last day to explore Hanoi

  • Tomorrow I'm going to Halong Bay, so this is not the day before my flight, but the last day to explore the city.
  • Breakfast: something like chow mein with a yellow squash sauce, watermelon passion fruit, sausage, bacon, corn on the cob, red sticky rice with yogurt, some beans + boiled egg stirred up in miracle whip, deli ham, and chicken or beef pho
  • Set out to find the one-pillar pagoda, but never find it. Stumble upon Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum instead, which is PACKED. Apparently visitation is by appointment only.
  • Ron meets me there with kids, we go to Hanoi Hilton (POW museum where Americans were held during the Vietnam war.
  • The prison was actually built by the French when they were fighting the native Vietnamese.
  • Go try egg coffee at The Note CafĂ© - pretty much just tastes like coffee...
  • Try a taco place we saw while driving around a couple days before. Could this be Ron's new 'spot'??
  • Nope. It's better than the rest of the Mexican food attempts he's had in Vietnam, but not quite right. Ron and I give the owner some tips on how to make the food more authentic-tasting.
  • Start heading back to car. The kids see a carnival (an inflatable slide, bumper cars, and a mini lazy-river with plastic fish to 'catch' using a magnet on a plastic fishing rod. We spend some time there while they play.
  • Head back to Ron's condo, where Viet has been.
  • Go to a restaurant near their home. Get these skinny green squash + french fries for appetizer, fried sticky rice and fish soup over rice with an omelet on top for the meal. They forgot to make the fried chicken we ordered, but Ron says it probably comes with the head (that's the delicacy reserved for guests...I'll pass).
  • Drop kids and Viet back at the condo, Ron and I go to Legend Beer back downtown via taxi.
  • Watch the traffic (though it isn't as bad as it was before since they close half the street on the weekends).
  • Walk back to hotel via the 'night market' which we found to be really underwhelming.
  • Say bye to Ron
